Q?
Why did you start #thisgoldenlife?
-
A.
I started #thisgoldenlife because I am passionate about this amazing little mountain town and want to share my enthusiasm about it. And I want to do it from a perspective that is based in my own experiences. Plus, I like to write. I'm artistically challenged in most respects, so writing has become by main creative outlet. Thus enter #thisgoldenlife, a blog-based website devoted to exploring and celebrating the culture of Golden BC from a personal perspective. In sharing my own personal experiences and perspectives on Golden, I hope that this site becomes a resource for people interested in visiting or moving to our special mountain town --a place to learn about the town, its people, its artists, its cultural life, its businesses, its politics, and of course its lifestyle.

Why did you move to Golden?

A.
Our family moved to Golden BC from Calgary in the summer of 2013. We had been winter weekenders for years, loving the amazing downhill terrain at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort and testing out some cross country trails from time to time as well. Simply put, we started to wonder what our lives would be like if we didn't have to make the two-and-a-half hour drive back to the city every Sunday. We started to imagine ourselves living here full time and decided there was ultimately no down side.
Yes, my husband, who has a travel-based job, would have to commute to the airport. Fortunately I would be able to take my job with me, working remotely. Yes, the kids would have to adjust to life in a small town, make new friends and find new ways to get involved. And they would have to do this as teenagers or near-teenagers. And as parents we would have to work through our concerns about what moving to a small town might mean in terms of opportunities and choices for our children. Fast forward one year into our new life as full time Goldenites and I can honestly say one of the biggest lessons I've learned is that small town opportunities may sometimes come in different shapes and forms as those traditionally found in larger centres, but they are certainly not lesser in quality or in what they can provide for children's growth, development and leadership.
So we took the plunge. We are not the first. We certainly won't be the last. Every year in Golden BC there are new families moving in from Calgary and elsewhere, often for similar reasons to ours -- for the amazing outdoor lifestyle, for the simplicity, for the authentic small town vibe, for the affordability, and for the opportunities and potential Golden offers as a mountain town in transition. See the about page for more details.
